San Francisco 49ers sign kicker Billy Cundiff; keeping David Akers, too - San Jose Mercury News

San Francisco 49ers sign kicker Billy Cundiff; keeping David Akers, too - San Jose Mercury News: "The 49ers added to their collection of kickers Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year contract with Billy Cundiff, who will try to unseat the embattled David Akers.
The 49ers confirmed Cundiff's signing and announced that they have released linebacker Eric Bakthiari, who appeared in five games.
Coach Jim Harbaugh now has a week and a half to decide whether Akers or Cundiff will handle the placekicking chores when the 49ers host a playoff game at Candlestick Park on Jan. 12 against an undetermined opponent. San Francisco has a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed in the NFC.
Akers has been struggling this season. He has made just 69 percent of his field goal attempts, which is a career low, and is below 50 percent (9-of-19) from 40 yards or longer. He missed from 40 and 44 yards Sunday in a victory over Arizona.
Cundiff, 32, wasn't so hot himself this season, connecting on 7-of-12 field goal attempts before being released by the Washington Redskins. But he was 3-for-4 from 40 to 49 yards."
